Texas RV Registration: The Complete Fee Breakdown

Texas is one of the most RV-friendly states in the country — but it is not a flat fee for every motorhome, despite what you may have read elsewhere (including earlier versions of this page). Per the official 2026 TxDMV fee chart, only vehicles under 6,000 lbs get the $50.75 base rate (plus a $1 automation fee = $51.75 total). Most actual motorhomes — Class C at 10,000-14,500 lbs, Class A at 20,000-35,000+ lbs — fall into much higher weight brackets. A 20,000 lb Class A pays $205/year, not $51.75. Only a light Class B camper van under 6,000 lbs gets the cheap flat rate.

Texas also does not charge based on your RV's value — a $600,000 Class A and a $200,000 Class A of the same weight pay the identical registration fee. That part of the old pitch still holds; it's weight, not value, that drives the Texas number.

Here's the real 2026 weight-based fee schedule:

State fee only, from the official 2026 TxDMV chart above. Excludes the $1 automation fee and local county fee.

Plus: $1 statewide automation fee, a local county fee ($0-$21.50, e.g. $11.50 in Travis County), and a one-time title fee ($28-$33) at first registration.

Correction (2026): Texas eliminated the vehicle safety inspection requirement for non-commercial vehicles effective January 1, 2025 (House Bill 3297). There's no more physical inspection to schedule. In its place, non-commercial vehicles pay a $7.50/year "inspection program replacement fee" ($16.75 covering the first two years on a newly purchased vehicle). If your RV is registered in one of about 17 metro counties (Harris, Dallas, Travis, El Paso, and similar), you'll still need an annual emissions test — that's separate from the old safety inspection and is not required elsewhere in the state.

Why Texas Is the #2 Choice for Full-Timer Domicile

★ Full-Timer Friendly

After South Dakota, Texas is the most popular domicile state for full-time RVers. The reasons stack up fast: no state income tax, no more safety inspection to schedule, no personal property tax on vehicles, and the world's largest full-timer RV community centered around Escapees RV Club headquarters in Livingston, TX.

Setting up Texas residency as a full-timer requires visiting the state and getting a Texas ID or driver's license. Escapees' Rainbow's End RV Park in Livingston serves as a legal address for thousands of full-timers. The process typically takes one to two days on-site and costs under $200 total including Escapees membership, address service, and DMV fees.

The one thing to plan around: registration cost scales with weight, so a heavy Class A costs meaningfully more to register in Texas than in a true flat-fee state. For most full-timers, the tax savings and inspection-free process still make Texas worth it — just don't expect the same $51.75 sticker price regardless of rig size.

Frequently Asked Questions — Texas RV Registration

Can I register my RV in Texas if I live in another state?

You can legally establish Texas as your domicile state and register your RV there if you take the steps to become a Texas resident — obtaining a TX driver's license or ID. Simply having a P.O. box in Texas is not sufficient. Full-timers typically partner with a mail forwarding service like Escapees to establish legal residency.

Do I need a vehicle inspection to register my RV in Texas?

No — Texas eliminated the safety inspection requirement for non-commercial vehicles as of January 1, 2025 (House Bill 3297). You'll instead pay a $7.50/year inspection program replacement fee ($16.75 for the first two years on a newly purchased vehicle). If your RV is registered in one of about 17 metro counties (Harris, Dallas, Travis, El Paso, and similar), you'll still need an annual emissions test, which is separate from the old safety inspection.

Is there a weight limit or weight-based fee in Texas for RVs?

Yes — Texas registration is weight-based for anything over 6,000 lbs, whether it's a motorhome or a trailer. Only a light Class B van or small trailer under 6,000 lbs gets the $50.75 base rate. A Class C around 12,000 lbs pays $110/year, and a 20,000+ lb Class A pays $205/year or more. What Texas doesn't do is charge based on your RV's value — a $600,000 motorhome and a $200,000 motorhome of the same weight pay the same fee.

What is Texas sales tax on an RV purchase?

Texas charges 6.25% state sales tax on vehicle purchases, including RVs. Some counties add up to 2% local tax (max combined rate: 8.25%). This is a one-time cost paid at purchase, not an annual fee. If you're buying a high-value Class A, the sales tax is typically far larger than the first year's registration fee.

How do I register my RV in Texas as a full-timer with no fixed address?

The most common approach is using Escapees RV Club's mail forwarding service in Livingston, TX. You visit in person (often a 1-2 day stop), get your Texas ID using the Escapees address, register your vehicle at the Polk County DMV, and leave with full legal TX residency. The Escapees address service runs from $18-75/year depending on your membership level.
