Some full-timers register their RV through a Montana LLC to legally avoid sales tax in their home state. Run the numbers — is it actually worth it for your rig?
⚠ The Montana LLC strategy may violate your home state's tax laws if you are an actual resident. Always consult a tax attorney before using this approach.

Most states bundle multiple charges into what they call a "registration fee." Here's what you're actually paying for.
📄
Base Registration Fee
The core annual fee charged by the state. Ranges from $15 (Mississippi) to $262+ (Montana). This is the number most people see quoted online.
⚖
Weight Fee
About half of states charge extra based on Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Heavier Class A motorhomes pay more than pop-up trailers.
📊
Vehicle License Tax / Value Fee
States like AZ, CA, CO, and MN calculate part of your fee as a percentage of the vehicle's value. This decreases each year as your RV depreciates.
🏭
County / Local Fees
Most states allow counties to tack on additional fees ($5–$50+). These vary even within the same state and aren't always included in state-published rates.
🌟
Title Fee (One-Time)
Paid once when you first register the RV. Ranges from $10 to $75. Not included in annual renewal fees — don't confuse these when buying used.
🔍
Vehicle Inspection
About 15 states require periodic inspections. Cost: $15–$100. Full-timers often choose SD, TX, or FL specifically to avoid this requirement.
🏠
Property Tax (Some States)
States like VA, NC, and SC assess personal property tax on your RV separately from registration. Can add hundreds per year on a high-value unit.
🚘
License Plates
Initial plate issuance is often $5–$20 extra. Some states offer RV-specific specialty plates at additional cost ($25–$100).
3 Things That Aren't Registration (But People Confuse)
Sales Tax — Paid when you buy the RV, not at annual registration. Montana has none. Some states (OR, MT, NH, DE) have no sales tax at all.
Use Tax — Some states charge this if you bought your RV out of state to avoid their sales tax. Worth knowing before a cross-border purchase.
Campground Permits / Passes — State park passes, National Park passes, and campground memberships are completely separate from vehicle registration.
